This item is a set of 6 antique Johnson Brother's butter pats decorated in the'Jewel' pattern. Each dish measures 2 7/8" (7.3 cm) in diameter and stand 1/2" (1.2 cm) tall. The Johnson Brothers established their kilns in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, England, in 1883.

Since 1968, they have operated as part of the Wedgwood group. In 2003, the British factory in Hanley closed; henceforth all manufacturing for Johnson Brothers is done in China. This pattern,'Jewel', was created early in the 20th century, around 1910. The Jewel pattern has a wider flow-blue border with elaborate scroll work in Art-Nouveau style.

They are further embellished with some nice gold work along the outer edges and woven into the flow-blue pattern. These small butter plates do not have the under glaze flow-blue Johnson Brother's mark on the back side. This is not unusual for smaller pieces such as butter pats because of the limited surface area on the back of the piece. You will find the mold number and decorator's mark on the back side of these dishes. I do know the pattern name is'Jewel', because these butter pats are part of a set I have that includes cups, saucers, and larger plates.

They are all marked with a crown and crossed swords, the mark Johnson Brothers has been using since 1913, and the JEWEL the pattern name on them. This is one of the more sought-after patterns out of more than 1300 patterns used over the life of the Johnson Brother's company. The condition of these butter pats is excellent. One of the pats has a tiny, flea-sized chip on the backside edge of the trim, and cannot be seen without turning the dish upside down. Each plate shows slightly different wear from the past 100 years of service.

There are no other damages, chips, cracks, crazing or repairs other than already mentioned. Please see photos for details. These lovely butter pats would compliment any table setting with their gentle, eye-pleasing shape and color! It's like adding a little bit of British history to your table when you break out these charming butter pats. The butter pats are described as objectively as possible.
